Justice Kaye Hearn retired from the South Carolina judiciary in 2023 after a 37-year career — the longest tenure in state court history — including 13 years on the SC Supreme Court, 15 years on the SC Court of Appeals, and 9 years on the family court bench. She was the first woman to serve as chief judge of the court of appeals and the second woman to sit on the state's highest court.
A cum laude graduate of Bethany College and the University of South Carolina School of Law, with an LL.M. from the University of Virginia, Justice Hearn now practices litigation and appellate law with the Wyche Firm in Greenville and Columbia. Her many honors include the Woman of Achievement Award, the Jurist of the Year Award, and recognition in the 2025 Best Lawyers in America.
She lives in Horry County, where her daughter Kathleen serves as a Magistrate Judge.
